Borges — A Labyrinth Typeface

A glimpse into Borges, a typeface born from the idea of turning writing into a pattern.

Origin and inspiration

After reading some collections by Jorge L. Borges, I asked myself if it would be possible to capture in a typeface the image—or rather the many images—that he associates with the labyrinth. 

This experimental typeface is my personal attempt to answer that question: every time a page is written, countless (infinite?) paths appear within the labyrinth it composes. 

I deliberately put aside readability in favor of creating an effect of disorientation.

Starting from the gothic textura, I transformed it into a labyrinth: a structure of blacks and whites, lines and columns, capable of becoming both writing and a contemplative mandala where you can lose yourself and find yourself again.

The first release of Borges, Square Pixel, explores balance between black and white, strokes and spaces, seeking a dense and harmonious texture that never settles into repetition but stays alive and unpredictable.

Accessibility and universality

Borges works on any standard software as a normal typeface. I wanted it to be immediate, with no technical barriers: install it and type, opening up decorative and narrative possibilities for everyone.

No one ever found it; under the countless skies of the world there is no man who has explored all the labyrinths.

Process

Borges typefase was born on paper, starting with a squared notebook and a parallel pen. I filled the pages with letters, trying again and again to find the right forms that could create a texture both compact and unpredictable.
This manual phase, with ink and parellel pen strokes, gave the font its unique identity before moving into digital form.

License

Borges Square Pixel is released under the Open Font License (OFL).
I chose this license to guarantee freedom of use, modification and sharing, while maintaining author recognition.
The Square Pixel variant will always remain available under this open license.

Future Variants

Borges will evolve into a system of typographic labyrinths.

Variable
 The Two Kings and the Two Labyrinths

This variant is inspired by Borges’ short story. The variable axis interpolates from the initial state (black and white holding equal weight, as in the Square Pixel version) to an extreme state where the thickness of the forms progressively thins until it disappears — a typographic metaphor for the desert, which Borges himself calls «the greatest of all labyrinths».
